Accomplishments of SAPTA (2004-2010)


2004

  • Registration of SAPTA Trust in Kenya as a nonprofit organization
  • Beginning of SAPTA Foundation: a 501 (c) 3 American nonprofit organization

2005

  • Official opening of SAPTA main office by Ambassador William Bellamy, USA ambassador to Kenya (September 2005)
  •  Beginning of diploma in addiction counseling training program
  • Registration with NAADAC (National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors) as an addiction counseling training program (first and as of yet only one registered in Africa)

2006

  1. Outpatient treatment services opened
  2. AED: Cathy Ngarachu works with 10 treatment centers to integrate HIV/AIDS into their treatment programs
  3. SAPTA draws up First Strategic Plan
  4. Mombasa Diploma Class starts

2007

  • Opening of SAPTA Kibera office for prevention and outpatient treatment
  • Ford: SAPTA Kibera: Substance Abuse/HIV/AIDS health education given to 2,700 out of youth school; educational talks at HIV/AIDS clinics; through soccer events, participative educational theatre and music concerts Substance Abuse/HIV/AIDS health education presented to 37,500 youth; door to door sensitization campaigns on Substance Abuse/HIV/AIDS
  • AED: training of 25 students in Kisumu (Western Kenya) trained for one month study on addictions and counseling; 127 VCT counselors trained on the integration of alcohol/drugs/ HIV/AIDS, brief intervention and referral
  • First Graduation of Diploma students: 17 diploma students graduated; Dr. Kiema, the head of Mental Health Services, Ministry of Health, the guest of honor

2008

  • SAPTA survives the post-election violence period in the early part of the year and re-organizes its program in Kibera
  • Ford program: Kibera: over 200 at risks for substance abuse and HIV persons attend Prevention Awareness Groups: this is an 8 week two sessions per alcohol/drug/HIV risk reduction program
  • Ford program: Production of two IEC pamphlets: Alcohol and Risky Sexual Behavior and Alcohol and ARVs
  • Pathfinder program: Kibera: sponsored soccer events, participative educational theatre, talks in HIV clients on alcohol and HIV
  • AED: 122 VCT counselors trained on the integration of alcohol/drugs/ HIV/AIDS, brief intervention and referral
  • AmFAR: piloting of alcohol/drug/HIV risk reduction workshop for HIV peer education counselors men who have sex with men in Mombasa on the coast of Kenya
  • Second Diploma Student graduation: 34 diploma students graduated on 27th June 2008
  • Production of Training Manual for the Integration of alcohol and drug screening into Voluntary HIV Testing and Counseling
  • Piloting of 3 day training of Voluntary HIV counselors for alcohol and drug screening into VCT, brief intervention and referral
  • KAVS 1: operation research (USAID funded) by Population Council, Liverpool VCT and SAPTA on the feasibility of integrating alcohol screening, brief intervention and referral in VCT sessions
  • Production of a 5 day training manual for the integration of HIV/AIDS into substance abuse treatment centers
  • SAPTA draws up first Business Plan
  • Dr. Sinkele introduces at stakeholders' information breakfast the concept of triple converging epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa: HIV/AIDS, TB and Substance Abuse

2009

  • SAPTA participates in Ministry of Education program to draw up a standardized national addiction counselor diploma curriculum
  • Ford program: Kibera: over 200 at risk persons for substance abuse and HIV participated in the Prevention Awareness Groups: an 8 week 2 session per week alcohol/drug/HIV risk reduction program; others attended free outpatient treatment
  • Pathfinder program: Kibera: alcohol and drug prevention programs such as soccer matches, Participative Educational Theatre, continuation of training of community, educational and religious leaders on alcohol, drugs and HIV/AIDS
  • AED: 22 former SAPTA trained addiction counselors provide alcohol/HIV/AIDS brief counseling in 10 HIV/AIDS organizations; 33 support groups formed from this intervention in the 10 HIV/AIDS organizations
  • AmFAR: piloting of alcohol/drug/HIV risk reduction workshop for HIV peer education counselors men who have sex with men in two locations on the coast of Kenya
  • SAPTA International NGO (non governmental organization) is recognized by the Kenya NGO Council
  • First full board of SAPTA International NGO formed: 7 new Kenyan members
  • Strategic Plan is revised by members of SAPTA NGO board and the management staff
  • Third Graduation of Diploma Students: 27 diploma students graduated on 6th November 2009: Dr. Marx Okonji, chairman of the Kenya Psychiatric Association, the guest of honor
  • Dr. Sinkele participates in 6 weeks training course on Therapeutic Communities by Daytop
  • Alcohol/HIV Think Tank is formed: Population Council, Liverpool VCT and SAPTA

2010

  • NACADA (Kenyan anti-drug agency) publishes the minimum standards for inpatient and outpatient treatment centers. Dr. Sinkele had served on the committee to formulate standards.
  • By the end of this year over 130 students will have graduated with the diploma in chemical dependency counseling since the beginning of the program in 2005
  • Population Council survey (USAID funded) in Kibera for alcohol, drug abuse and risky sexual behavior for out of school in Kibera with SAPTA intervening with youth identified with substance abuse
  • KAVS 2: Population Council, Liverpool VCT and SAPTA initiate Phase 2 of the Kenya Alcohol operational research (USAID funded) for the integration of alcohol/drug screening in 15 Liverpool VCT sites and brief interventions/psycho-educational sessions in 17 Post Test Clubs sites across Kenya
  • Family Health International with SAPTA to initiate an operational research (USAID funded) for brief intervention with female sex workers at the Coast who are drinking either hazardously or harmfully
  • AED: 4 hospitals (Kericho Hospital; Coptic Hospital; Kenyatta Hospital; Bomu Hospital in Mombasa) with HIV/AIDS program receive training on the integration of alcohol and drug abuse into their HIV programs
  • 24th June: Fund raising dinner with Mrs. Raila Odinga, the wife of the Kenyan Prime Minister, Mr. Raila Odinga, as the chief guest of honor. Launch of the new website.

pepfarSAPTA has received funding from PEPFAR to setup two IDU facilities in Nairobi.

 

SAPTA was accepted as a recipient of global fund round 10 to work with IDU ,sex workers and alcohol related problems.
